About this website
“History of Europe on a map” is an educational website provided free of charge, with no advertising, no accounts and no cookies. Click a place in Europe to see which state or pre-state polity it belonged to, and how that changed over time.
About the author
This is a hobby project, built in my spare time out of curiosity about how the borders of Europe have moved over the centuries. If you enjoy it, have a look at my GitHub and LinkedIn.
I also run mediqcare.pl, a business website for doctors. That is the place for professional enquiries: you will find the business contact there, along with a more polished description of what I do.
Accuracy and liability
Historical borders are disputed and often uncertain, and the data used here is approximate and partly a work in progress. The website is provided “as is”, for information and education only. It is not a legal, academic or authoritative source; please verify important facts elsewhere. To the extent permitted by law, we accept no liability for the use of the information shown or for the temporary unavailability of the website.
Licenses and attribution
- The source code of this website is free software released under the GNU GPL v3.0 (GPL-3.0); see the repository.
- Historical borders come primarily from OpenHistoricalMap (data dedicated to the public domain under CC0; map data courtesy of the OpenHistoricalMap project). Where that data has gaps, they are completed with Historical Basemaps by Andrew Ourednik, released under the GPL-3.0 license. Areas drawn from Historical Basemaps are marked “approximate” on the site.
- Coastlines are clipped to the land using Natural Earth data, which is in the public domain.
- The map is rendered with MapLibre GL JS (BSD-3-Clause).
